With the recent addition of the Shovel, and even more recently the Sickle, players of COD: Mobile now have more options to choose from when selecting a melee weapon. What's the difference between all of them, and which is the best? These are the questions that this article is setting out to answer.
There are currently 6 different melee weapons available in COD: Mobile: the Knife, Base Melee, Axe, Shovel, Baseball Bat, and Sickle. Please note that there are several melee weapons that are merely blueprints of the Base Melee weapon.
These include the Hachi sword, the Katana, the Kambit (which is the curved knife), the Glow Stick, the Ice Axe, and others. These are all covered under the 'Base Melee' weapon type in this article.
To figure out the difference between these melee weapons, we need to consider the stats of each weapon, which are shown in the following table:
This table shows each weapon's Damage (DMG), Fire Rate (FR), Mobility (MOB), and Range (RNG). Please note that Accuracy and Control are not included because they are identical for all 6 melee weapons.
The table is separated into 3 sections, each color-coded (blue, yellow, and green). The 2 weapons in each section are identical to each another. (The exception to this is the yellow section; the Axe and the Shovel are identical except for their Damage, of which the Shovel has 10 more than the Axe).
Now that we have their stats in front of us, deciding which melee weapon is the "best" involves one more factor, which is the kind of melee attacker you prefer to be: slower with longer range, or faster with shorter range.
Play Style #1: Slower w/ Longer Range
Up until recently, the Axe, which has 15 Range, was the only long-ranged melee weapon, with all of the others having 10 Range each. With the newly-introduced Shovel recently added into the mix, both the Axe and the Shovel, which both have 15 Range, have the distinction of being the longest-ranged melee weapons.
Although an extra 5 Range might not seem like much, it can actually make a world of difference. Thanks to their Range, wielders of the Axe and the Shovel are able to kill enemies holding one of the other melee weapons before the opponent can land a hit. As long as you're accurate with your melee weapon hits on the first swing, the Axe and the Shovel come out on top.
So should you choose the Axe or the Shovel? Well, if you're playing on Multiplayer, Damage actually tends to not matter; the enemy dies upon being hit regardless of Damage. In this case, you could choose either, since their stats are identical otherwise.
However, if you're playing Battle Royale, then the clear choice is the Shovel. An extra 10 Damage can be the difference between living and dying, so you might as well not take the chance.
Play Style #2: Faster w/ Shorter Range
On the other hand, when it comes to close combat fighting, the four other melee weapons (the Knife, Base Melee, Baseball Bat, and Sickle) tend to have the upper hand, due to their higher Fire Rate (which allows you more swings per second) and Mobility (which allows the player to move more quickly).
If you're playing Multiplayer, there is no question; since Damage tends to not matter, the better choices are the Knife and the Base Melee weapons (which, again, have identical stats). They have 10 Fire Rate, which is 2 higher than the 8 Fire Rate of the Baseball Bat and the Sickle.
For Battle Royale, you have to consider which is more worthwhile: +20 Damage, in which case you'd choose the Bat or the Sickle, or +2 Fire Rate, in which case you'd still choose the Knife or the Base Melee.
Conclusion
I personally prefer to use the Axe (or Shovel, if I'm playing Battle Royale); the fact that I'm able to kill enemies more quickly due to the longer range is exactly my cup of tea. However, if you are the kind of player that is skilled with high-paced movement and you know that you can easily maneuver close enough to your opponents to kill them, the Knife/Base Melee are probably better options for you. The only time I could see the Bat and Sickle being useful is during Battle Royale, but even then, you'll have to decide if you'd prefer more Damage to better Fire Rate.
